St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital Goes “3-D” In Fight Against Breast Cancer

St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital (SLWH) said today it is advancing early diagnosis and detection of breast cancer with a new 3-D digital mammography unit that provides an extremely precise, clear picture of small, often undetected tumors.

“The new 3-D imaging unit gives physicians and patients alike an extra advantage in the fight against breast cancer,” Debra F. Sukin, senior vice president, St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, and chief executive officer, SLWH and St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital. “We’re combining the power of early detection with the precision of 3-D digital images to more accurately diagnosis breast cancer, even when tumors are small.”

This particular 3-D digital mammography system is available in only 100 sites in the United States, including SLWH. It applies breast tomosynthesis, an advanced technology for radiologists to identify and characterize individual breast structures. During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3-D reconstruction of the breast.

SLWH offers a comprehensive breast health program, which includes the annual “BeAware” educational speaker series each fall.  In addition to the latest technology in 3-D breast imaging, St. Luke’s also offer top quality care utilizing a medical team comprised of fellowship-trained, board certified physicians including a breast radiologist, breast pathologist and a breast surgical oncologist.

Appointments are available, with extended hours for convenient scheduling.  Call 936-266-3200, Option #3 to schedule your exam, or for additional information.  St. Luke’s The Woodlands also offers complimentary valet parking from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
