Dr. J. Michael Graham and St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital First in Texas to Perform Innovative Cervical Spine Implant Surgical Procedure Utilizing the SECURE®-C Cervical Artificial Disc
Advancing the frontiers of modern spinal surgery, J. Michael Graham, MD, PhD, FAAOS, has performed the first cervical spine surgical procedure utilizing the SECURE®-C Cervical Artificial Disc in the state at St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital.
On December 3, 2012, Dr. Graham surgically implanted the SECURE®-C Cervical Artificial Disc, a motion-sparing technology designed as an alternative to fusion, in a 55-year old patient.
“This innovative technique allows us to replace a painful cervical disc with an artificial disc, without having to fuse the bones together, which is the most common surgical treatment for that problem,” Dr. Graham explained. “This is a huge advantage for the patient, since the technique allows preservation of the normal range of motion of the spine. The most recent clinical outcome study shows that artificial disc replacement is superior to anterior cervical fusion for treatment of intractable cervical radiculopathy at two years postoperative.”
The new cutting-edge artificial disc produces the most natural range of motion for the patient as it simulates the natural movement of a spinal disc in the neck, therefore improving mobility. At the time of this landmark procedure, Dr. Graham was the first surgeon in Texas to offer this newly designed and FDA-approved alternative to fusion, and St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital remains the only facility in Southeast Texas that offers the surgical procedure using the SECURE®-C Cervical Artificial Disc.
Debra F. Sukin, CEO, St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital and St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital, and Senior Vice President, St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, said, “We are proud to announce this milestone event in surgical advances, and we are pleased to have Dr. Graham’s talent and specialized training among the team of physicians at St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital, as we strive to bring the best of the best in quality healthcare to the local community.”
