St. Luke's The Woodlands Hospital’s Pediatric Emergency Department Receives Artwork Inspired by Famed Children’s Author from Junior League

The Pediatric Emergency Department at St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital (SLWH) recently received  art murals inspired by famed children's artist and author Eric Carle, thanks to a collaboration with the Junior League of North Harris and South Montgomery Counties.

“It gives us great pleasure to display such beautiful and uplifting murals in our Pediatric Emergency Department,” said Peg Reiter, RN, PhD, vice president and chief nursing officer, SLWH. “We hope that children and families can identify with these amazing characters while seeking care here at St. Luke's. These murals provide a whimsical distraction and a soothing element to our environment as we provide Faithful, Loving Care® to our youngest patients.”

Christi Wetzel, co-chair of  the SLWH committee for the Junior League of North Harris and South Montgomery Counties, explained, “Peg Reiter approached us last spring to see if the Junior League would partner with St. Luke's to get a mural for their Pediatric Emergency Department. I brought Peg a bag full of my boys’ favorite books, and she was immediately drawn to Eric Carle’s book Slowly, Slowly, Goes the Sloth. Houston artist Vivian ‘Bibbi’ Anderson, the mother of one of our Junior League members, offered to be a part of this project. Bibbi is wonderfully talented and energetic, and has been very committed to this project. She donated more than 250 hours to create the murals from Carle’s artwork.”

Wetzel noted that, in addition to the murals, the Junior League supplied a board book in each treatment room for an “Eye Spy” effect for patients.

“Eric Carle's beloved characters appeal to all ages,” continued Wetzel. “Bibbi has brought to life the timeless characters from The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Lonely Firefly, The Very Quiet Cricket, and The Grouchy Ladybug. Each mural is a testament to her amazing talent.  She has poured her heart and soul into these murals. It has been a wonderful partnership.”

St. Luke's The Woodlands Hospital is the only hospital in North Harris and Montgomery Counties to have board-certified pediatric emergency physicians available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Pediatric medical care at SLWH is provided by Texas Children’s Hospital®.
